Yeast infections are one of the most common types of fungal infections, and anyone can get them. While most people likely think of vaginal yeast infections when they think about yeast infections, there are actually different types.
Yeast infections of the skin are known scientifically as cutaneous candidiasis, and they’re caused by candida (a yeast-like fungus). Because the fungus is yeast-like, yeast infections happen when yeast on the skin grows more actively.
Some of the more common symptoms of a yeast infection are red skin, itchiness, and scaly skin. However, they are not contagious. Although yeast infections can occur at nearly any place on the body, they usually thrive in warm, moist, creased areas. Therefore, the most commons areas to find yeast infections are in the armpit or the groin.
People who are obese or have diabetes are at an especially high risk for a yeast infection. Candida can also cause diaper rash in babies, infection of the nail, vaginal yeast infections, and mouth infection (oral thrush).
Symptoms of infection of the nail are:
- Swelling
- Pain
- Pus
- Yellow or white color in the nail
Symptoms of oral thrush are:
- White spots on the tongue and cheeks (inside)
- Pain
Symptoms of vaginal yeast infection include:
- White or yellow discharge
- Itchiness
- Redness around the vagina
- Burning
How you treat your yeast infection depends on the type of yeast infection that you have. Yeast infections of the skin are easily treated with creams, but suppositories may be used to treat a vaginal infection. For an oral thrush, you’ll likely need to use a medicated mouthwash or lozenge. If someone has a severe yeast infection, they may need to take an oral anti-yeast medication.
